Trusting God When You Feel Helpless

Do you feel helpless in the middle of troubles, making you think God has forgotten you? This will encourage you to trust and have hope in God.

Have you ever lain awake at night, wondering if God has forgotten about you?

You pray. You wait. You hope. Yet the circumstances don’t seem to change.

Maybe you’ve watched someone who has no interest in God appear to have an easy, carefree life while you continue walking through one difficult season after another. They seem healthy, financially secure, and untouched by hardship, while you feel as though you’re barely keeping your head above water.

If you’ve ever whispered, “Lord, where are You?” you’re not alone.

Many faithful men and women throughout Scripture wrestled with those same emotions. David certainly did. He looked around and saw wicked people prospering while the innocent suffered. Yet instead of allowing discouragement to consume him, he poured out his heart to God.

And in the middle of Psalm 10, we find a beautiful reminder for every weary heart:

“But You have seen, for You observe trouble and grief, To repay it by Your hand. The helpless commits himself to You; You are the helper of the fatherless.”
Psalm 10:14 (NKJV)

What comforting words.

The helpless commits himself to You.

That is exactly what trust looks like.

God Sees Every Tear

One of Satan’s greatest lies is convincing us that God doesn’t see our pain.

When life becomes overwhelming, it can feel as though heaven has gone silent. We wonder why our prayers seem unanswered. We question whether God notices what we’re carrying.

But Psalm 10 reminds us of something incredibly important.

God sees.

He sees every tear you’ve cried behind closed doors.

He sees the doctor’s report that changed everything.

He sees the empty chair at the dinner table.

He sees the prodigal child you’ve prayed for year after year.

He sees the loneliness that no one else recognizes.

He sees the anxiety that keeps your mind racing.

Nothing escapes His loving gaze.

While people may overlook your pain, your heavenly Father never does.

God Has Not Forgotten You

Sometimes our feelings tell us one thing while God’s Word tells us something completely different.

Your emotions may whisper:

“I’m forgotten.”

“God isn’t listening.”

“Nothing will ever change.”

But Scripture speaks louder than our feelings.

God repeatedly promises His children that He will never abandon them.

He walks beside us through every valley, every storm, and every unexpected turn in life.

Even when you cannot see His hand, you can trust His heart.

One day every person will stand before God and give an account for the life they lived. While it may seem today that evil prospers and injustice wins, that is not the end of the story.

God is just.

He sees every wrong.

He knows every heart.

Nothing will remain hidden forever.

Knowing this allows us to rest instead of trying to carry burdens that belong to Him.

When Life Leaves You Feeling Helpless

There are seasons that leave us feeling completely powerless.

Perhaps you’re walking through one of them right now.

Maybe you’ve experienced the death of a parent who always seemed to be your safe place.

Perhaps you’ve become a widow and the silence in your home feels unbearable.

Maybe you’ve buried a child or suffered the heartbreaking loss of a miscarriage.

Perhaps your husband left, and you’re trying to pick up the pieces of a life you never imagined.

Maybe your adult child has walked away from the Lord, and your prayers seem to go unanswered.

Or perhaps your struggle isn’t something anyone else can see. You’re exhausted, anxious, discouraged, or simply overwhelmed by the responsibilities you carry every day.

Whatever your story looks like, God cares.

He is not distant.

He is not indifferent.

He is near to the brokenhearted.

The Lord invites you to bring your helplessness to Him instead of trying to carry it alone.

Trust Grows When We Spend Time with Jesus

One of the greatest temptations during hardship is pulling away from God.

When we’re hurting, we often stop reading our Bible.

We stop praying.

We stop worshiping.

We become so focused on our circumstances that we slowly lose sight of Jesus.

Yet the very thing our hearts need most is His presence.

Trust doesn’t grow by accident.

It grows every time we open God’s Word.

Every time we whisper another prayer.

Every time we choose faith over fear.

Every time we remember His faithfulness in the past.

The more time we spend with Him, the more we begin to recognize His voice above the noise of our circumstances.

Keep Your Eyes on Jesus

Difficult seasons have a way of narrowing our vision.

Instead of seeing God’s faithfulness, we see only our problems.

Instead of noticing His blessings, we notice our losses.

Instead of remembering His promises, we replay our fears.

We all face that choice.

Will we allow hardship to consume our thoughts?

Or will we intentionally turn our eyes back toward Christ?

The cross reminds us that God’s love has already been proven.

If He loved us enough to send His Son to die in our place, we can trust Him with today’s unanswered questions.

We may not understand everything He allows.

But we can always trust His character.

Three Bible Verses to Hold Onto

When you begin feeling helpless, fill your heart with God’s promises instead of your fears.

1. God Is Your Safe Place

“The name of the Lord is a strong tower; The righteous run to it and are safe.”
Proverbs 18:10 (NKJV)

The world offers temporary security.

God offers lasting refuge.

Run to Him first—not last.

2. His Joy Gives You Strength

“…Do not sorrow, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”
Nehemiah 8:10 (NKJV)

Joy isn’t pretending life is easy.

Biblical joy comes from knowing that God is still in control even when life feels uncertain.

His joy becomes the strength that carries us through difficult days.

3. God Promises to Help You

“Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.”
Isaiah 41:10 (NKJV)

Notice all the promises packed into one verse.

I am with you.

I am your God.

I will strengthen you.

I will help you.

I will uphold you.

What more could our hearts possibly need?

One More Way to Strengthen Your Trust

There is one simple practice that has encouraged me again and again.

Remember God’s faithfulness.

Take time to write down the ways He has answered prayers in the past.

Record the times He provided when you didn’t know how things would work out.

Write about the seasons He carried you through that once seemed impossible.

Keeping a prayer journal or gratitude journal helps us remember that the same God who was faithful yesterday is still faithful today.

When new trials come, those memories become powerful reminders that He has never failed you.

The Lord Hears the Helpless

Psalm 10 closes with these comforting words:

“Lord, You have heard the desire of the humble; You will prepare their heart; You will cause Your ear to hear, To do justice to the fatherless and the oppressed, That the man of the earth may oppress no more.”
Psalm 10:17–18 (NKJV)

What hope!

God hears.

God strengthens.

God comforts.

God brings justice.

And God never forgets His children.

Friend, if you feel helpless today, know that you are not alone.

Your Heavenly Father sees every burden you’re carrying.

He knows every unanswered question.

He understands every tear you’ve cried.

Keep running to Him.

Keep opening His Word.

Keep trusting Him one day at a time.

You may not see the whole picture today, but you can rest knowing the One who holds your future is holding you, too.

His love has never failed you.

And it never will.

What situation in your life feels impossible right now?

Take a few quiet moments today to bring it before the Lord. Read Psalm 10 slowly, and notice every reminder that God sees, hears, and cares for the helpless. Then write down one way you have seen His faithfulness in the past. Let that memory strengthen your trust as you place today’s burdens into His loving hands.
