The River of Life: Finding Hope When You’re Weary

Discover how Revelation 22:1–5 gives hope when life feels worn out. Learn how the River of Life points us to Jesus and our eternal home.

Does it ever seem like everything wears out?

• The sheets on your bed become thin.
• Your favorite jeans develop holes.
• The toaster quits working.
• Even our own bodies remind us that life on earth isn’t meant to last forever.

Flowers bloom beautifully for a season before they fade.

We grow older with each passing year.

Relationships experience heartache.

Our homes require constant repairs.

Everywhere we look, we see the effects of living in a broken world.

If you’ve been feeling weary because of life’s disappointments, I have wonderful news for you.

God’s best is still ahead.

This World Was Never Meant to Last

We naturally want new things.

• The newest phone.
• The newest car.
• The newest decorating trend.

But before long, those things become outdated or worn out.

Jesus reminded us not to store up treasures on earth because they rust, decay, and can even be stolen (Matthew 6:19). Creation itself is longing to be set free from the curse of sin (Romans 8:21).

That longing points us toward something far greater.

A Beautiful Picture of Heaven

Revelation 22 gives us one of the most breathtaking pictures in all of Scripture.

John describes a crystal-clear River of Life flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb.

On either side stands the Tree of Life, bearing twelve kinds of fruit every month. Its leaves bring healing to the nations.

Everything in this passage speaks of abundance, life, restoration, and God’s presence.

The source of every blessing is the throne itself.

Jesus, our Lamb, is at the center.

The River of Life

And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb.  In the middle of its street, and on either side of the river, was the tree of life, which bore twelve fruits, each tree yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. And there shall be no more curse, but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it, and His servants shall serve Him. They shall see His face, and His name shall be on their foreheads.  There shall be no night there: They need no lamp nor light of the sun, for the Lord God gives them light. And they shall reign forever and ever. Revelation 22:1-5

My Favorite Promise

Of all the incredible promises in Revelation 22, one stands out to me every time I read it.

“There shall be no night there.”

Can you imagine that?

• No darkness.
• No fear.
• No anxiety.
• No loneliness.
• No wondering what tomorrow will bring.
• The Lord Himself will be our light forever.

If you’ve struggled with fear, grief, or uncertainty, these words bring incredible comfort.

When You Feel Worn Out

Perhaps today you’re exhausted.

Maybe you’re praying for a child (pray for my child) who isn’t walking with the Lord (can I pray for your child?).

Perhaps you’re caring for aging parents, helping with grandchildren (like I do), or carrying burdens no one else sees.

Jesus sees every one of them.

This passage reminds us not to place our hope in temporary things that wear out, fade away, or disappoint us.

Our hope rests in Christ.

Our future is secure because of Him.

Live Today with Eternity in View

Thinking about heaven doesn’t make us less useful here on earth.

Instead, it helps us hold earthly things more loosely.

• We love our families deeply.
• We faithfully serve where God has placed us.
• We enjoy the beauty of flowers, sunsets, and simple moments.
• But our hearts are anchored in something far greater.

One day we will stand before the throne.

One day there will be no more tears.

One day there will be no more darkness.

Until then, we keep our eyes on Jesus—the One who offers living water today and eternal life forever.
