Have you ever wanted a more consistent quiet time with Jesus but you didn’t know how to start?
Stop struggling to find a consistent quiet time. Learn how a simple gratitude habit brought back my joy, plus a 30-day gratitude Bible reading plan.
Or maybe you do have a quiet time. You open your Bible, you pour your coffee, and you sit down. But your mind is running in a dozen directions: the grocery list, the people you love, the calendar that keeps filling up. Before you know it, the time is gone, and you can’t remember a single thing you read.

I understand, friend. I’ve been there more times than I can count. And today I want to share something that changed my time with Jesus and, honestly, changed my heart. It’s a simple habit, and it’s not what you might expect.
It’s gratitude.
A little about me
If we haven’t met yet, my name is Judith, and I write here at His Unmeasured Grace. I’ve been sharing on this little corner of the internet for 15 years, and I’m so glad you found your way here.
I raised seven children and homeschooled them, so I know what busy looks like. I used to think life would slow down once they were grown. It hasn’t! Now my grandkids burst through the door with so much excitement and joy that you can’t help but stop everything and listen. I wouldn’t trade it for the world. But if I was in the middle of reading my Bible when they arrived, my quiet time was over for the day.
As women, the moment our feet hit the floor in the morning, we’re running. It can feel nearly impossible to carve out time alone with Jesus where we won’t be interrupted. And even when we
do manage it, our hearts don’t always slow down with us.
The Holiday Rush is Coming
It happens every year, doesn’t it? October slips toward November, and suddenly I’m thinking about Thanksgiving dinner, Christmas presents, and how close Christmas really is.
That rush follows me right into my quiet time. Even when I carve out 30 minutes, my mind can be somewhere else entirely. I’m sitting with Jesus, but I’m not really present with Him.
Maybe you feel that too. Maybe you’re already bracing for the busiest season of the year and wondering how you’ll keep your heart close to the Lord through it all.
That’s exactly why I want to talk about gratitude now, before the rush takes over.
My Story: from Melancholy to Joy
For years, I lived with a dull, heavy, “blah” feeling. It was close to depression. I wouldn’t call it that, but it was a weight I carried day after day. Maybe you know that feeling. Maybe you’re carrying it right now.
I wanted joy so badly. In fact, joy was my word of the year for a couple of years in a row. I searched for it. I prayed for it. I tried to make it happen.
But here’s what I learned: you can’t work up joy. Especially when you’re in a season of heaviness, you can’t simply decide to feel joyful and make it so. Joy is something God gives.
I was already spending time with Jesus during those years. I was reading my Bible and praying. But something was missing. What finally moved the needle, what helped me step out of that heaviness, was practicing gratitude.
When I began intentionally noticing God’s goodness and thanking Him for it, something shifted. I started to see His hand in the ordinary moments. I grew closer to Jesus. And slowly, the joy I had been searching for began to come back.
Gratitude Doesn’t Pretend Life is Easy
I want to be really clear about something, because I think it matters. Practicing gratitude doesn’t mean pretending everything is fine.
Life isn’t always easy. You may be walking through something really hard right now, just as I was in the past. Gratitude doesn’t ask you to ignore that. Instead, it invites you to bring those struggles to Jesus, honestly and openly, while also opening your eyes to the good He is still doing.
For me, that looks like noticing the leaves and the beautiful colors of fall. It also means being honest about the not-so-good things. (Today it’s cold outside, and I’m just not ready for that yet!) Gratitude makes room for both. It’s an honest conversation with a God who cares about every part of your life.
How to Start a Gratitude Habit
So how do you actually begin? Here’s the simple approach that has helped me most.
- Start on a Monday. Any Monday works, any time of year. This year, I’m starting soon so I finish by Thanksgiving and my heart is prepared before the season shifts toward Christmas.
- Read one verse a day. A 30-day gratitude Bible reading plan gives you a verse for each day, so you never have to wonder where to start.
- Empty your worries first. It’s hard to be thankful when your mind is full of frustrations. I use a “dump page” to get the worries and the to-do list out of my head and onto paper. Once they’re out, there’s room to fill your heart with something good.
- Write down what you’re grateful for. A gratitude list helps you think about what you’re thankful for in a focused way, instead of letting it stay a vague feeling.
- Write out scripture. Copying a verse by hand slows me down and helps it sink in. Some days I write a lot. Other days I write just a line or two, and that’s okay.
- Go at your own pace. If 30 days stretches into two or three months, that’s fine. Grace, not perfection.
And please hear this: it’s about the heart, not the art. You don’t need to be artistic or have pretty handwriting, and you don’t need to have it all together. Some of my journal pages are full and colorful. Others are simple and plain. Jesus isn’t grading your journal. He just wants your heart.

What’s Inside the Gratitude Journaling Workbook
To make this easy, I created a Gratitude Journaling Workbook to walk with you through each day. Here’s what’s inside:
- A 30-day gratitude Bible reading plan with one verse for each day
- A four-week overview with reflections, prompts, and encouragement woven throughout
- Journaling pages for each day, to fill as much or as little as your time allows
- Scripture writing pages to help God’s Word take root in your heart
- A gratitude printable to help you notice and name what you’re thankful for
- A dump page for clearing out worries so you can make room for thankfulness
- Prayer pages for bringing your struggles and your praises to Jesus
It’s beautiful in color, and it prints just fine in black and white too. (That’s how I print mine. It saves money!)
I’ve gone through this workbook myself, and I’m doing it all over again this season. Not as the teacher standing at the front of the room, but right alongside you, for real.
