Grace in Weakness: How God Uses Our Struggles for His Glory

Discover how God’s grace transforms our weakness into strength. Learn how He uses our struggles to reveal His glory and draw us closer.

Personal Struggle: Finding Grace in My Weakness

Taking tests in high school and college, was a challenge for me. When I attended the University of Hawaii, I had the opportunity to earn an “A” in General Psychology by passing each of the ten-chapter quizzes. The catch? I had to score 100% on every single one.

For most students, this might have been a stressful but achievable goal. For me, however, it felt almost impossible. My challenge wasn’t in studying—I worked so diligently that I could have written essays on each of the four multiple-choice options. My real struggle was selecting the correct answer. This disconnect left me feeling defeated and, ultimately, like a failure.

This sense of failure wasn’t limited to academics. It seeped into other areas of my life. Anytime I made a mistake, or things didn’t go as planned, that familiar feeling of inadequacy would resurface. I began to see my weaknesses as insurmountable obstacles that held me back.

But God had a different perspective.

Over time, as I worked through these issues, God gently began to show me how He could use my weaknesses for His glory. What I once saw as a personal flaw, He transformed into a testimony of His grace. My struggles became opportunities to lean on Him, to grow in humility, and to trust in His strength rather than my own.

This journey taught me one of the most beautiful truths about God: our weaknesses are not limitations in His hands—they’re opportunities for His power to shine through us.

In My Weakness God’s Grace is Sufficient!

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 2 Corinthians 12:9

This is a precious verse for those (like me) who doubt their worth.

The greatest joy you can have as a Christ follower is that Christ is magnified in our lives.

My abilities are not because I am great at anything but because God gave me that ability.

He gave me abilities (or not) so He will be magnified through me.

  • God chose Paul to be weak so He would be made strong!
  • If we are seen as self-sufficient – we will get the glory, not Christ!

So that no human being might boast in the presence of God. 1 Corinthians 1:29

Paul experienced this grace and rejoiced in it.

Are you satisfied with your abilities, great or small? Living by faith means we are confident in everything God has given us!

Our weakness and suffering are meant to direct us to the grace God has given to us. His grace is sufficient!

Living by Faith, Not by My Own Strength

Looking back, my struggles with test-taking and feelings of failure often stemmed from relying on my own abilities. I believed that if I worked hard enough or studied diligently enough, success would follow. But when I fell short, I was left feeling inadequate and defeated.

It was through my journey of faith that I began to understand the deeper truth of Galatians 2:20:

I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. Galatians 2:20

This verse changed everything.

It reminded me that my identity and worth aren’t defined by my achievements or failures but by Christ, who lives in me.

When I embrace this truth, I no longer strive to prove myself or carry the weight of my weaknesses alone.

Instead, I’m living by faith, trusting in the One who loved me enough to give His life for me.

Embracing Weakness: Faith and Trust

As followers of Christ, we are called to die to self and trust God’s plan for our lives.

Instead of trying to “fix” ourselves or rely solely on our own strength, we’re invited to surrender our weaknesses to Him and allow His power to work through us. It’s in absolute surrender we discover His grace, which transforms our struggles into opportunities for spiritual growth.

When we stop striving to control everything and start trusting God, our perspective shifts.

Weakness is no longer something to avoid or overcome on our own—it becomes a space where God’s strength is made perfect.

Here are some practical steps to embrace this mindset:

1. Spend Time Daily in God’s Word

The Bible is our guide and source of truth. By immersing yourself in Scripture, you’ll be reminded of God’s promises, love, and faithfulness. His Word renews your mind and equips you with the strength to face life’s challenges.

2. Pray for Strength and Guidance

Prayer is your direct connection to God. Take time daily to pour out your heart to Him, asking for strength in your weakness and guidance in your decisions. Prayer invites God into your circumstances and reminds you that He is with you every step of the way.

3. Reflect on God’s Faithfulness

When you’re struggling, look back on the times God has carried you through difficult seasons. Remind yourself of His faithfulness and provision in the past. These reminders will build your trust in His ability to work in your present and future.

4. Seek Support from Like-Minded Women

Community is a gift from God. Surround yourself with women who share your faith and can encourage you on your journey. Whether through Bible studies, prayer groups, or one-on-one friendships, these connections will strengthen you and remind you that you’re not alone.

A Call to Trust God’s Plan

Struggles in life are a part of God’s plan and greater purpose. When you embrace your weakness, you’ll discover His grace more fully.

Instead of seeing your weaknesses as limitations, you’ll begin seeing them as opportunities for God’s grace.

By Renewing your mind daily in the truth of His Word and surrendering your struggles to Him, you’ll find peace, strength, and a deeper trust in His perfect plan.
