Knowing Jesus Better — The Foundation of Fruitful Faith
In 2 Peter 1:2–4, Peter reminds us that “His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him.”
That phrase — “through the knowledge of Him” — is the heartbeat of our faith. It’s not just about learning facts about God, but truly knowing Jesus personally.
Spending time in His presence transforms us. As we sit with Him each morning — reading His Word, journaling, and praying — He reveals Himself more deeply. The Holy Spirit teaches us to think, love, and respond more like Jesus.
We live in a world overflowing with distractions, corruption, and fear. Yet through our relationship with Jesus, we are lifted above the noise. The closer we walk with Him, the more we see life through His eyes — and the less we are shaken by what surrounds us.
“Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.” — James 4:8
If you long for stability, joy, and peace amid life’s chaos, the key is simple:
Know Jesus better each day.
2 Peter 1:5–11 (NKJV)
“But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge,
to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness,
to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love.
For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
For he who lacks these things is shortsighted, even to blindness, and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his old sins.
Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your call and election sure, for if you do these things you will never stumble;
for so an entrance will be supplied to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”
A Spiritual Growth Map
Peter gives us a step-by-step picture of spiritual maturity — a map for our Christian journey. It begins with faith and builds toward love, forming a beautiful progression of Christlike character.
Let’s take a closer look at these qualities one by one.
1. Faith
Faith is where everything begins. It’s trusting God even when you don’t understand the “why.” It’s believing His Word is true — and stepping forward even when you can’t see the full path ahead.
You were saved through faith, and it continues to be the foundation of your walk with Jesus.
“Without faith it is impossible to please God.” — Hebrews 11:6
2. Virtue
Virtue is moral excellence — choosing what is right in God’s eyes even when it’s difficult. It’s living with integrity and purity in a world that often celebrates the opposite.
Ask yourself:
Am I living in a way that honors Jesus?
3. Knowledge
This is not head knowledge or mere Bible trivia. It’s relational — knowing God more intimately.
Each time you open your Bible, you’re not just reading words on a page — you’re sitting at the feet of your Savior.
Growth happens as you seek to understand His heart, not just His commands.
4. Self-Control
Self-control means saying no to sin, temptation, or distractions that pull you away from God’s best. It might mean being slow to speak, patient with your children, or disciplined in your thought life.
Without self-control, even strong faith can falter. But through the Spirit’s power, you can walk in calm obedience, even when your emotions or circumstances try to take over.
5. Perseverance
This is steady faithfulness through trials. It’s continuing to trust God when prayers seem unanswered. It’s staying the course when life is hard, knowing that Jesus is shaping your character through every difficulty.
Perseverance turns your pain into purpose.
6. Godliness
Godliness is living with reverence toward God — a deep awareness of His presence in your everyday life. It’s letting His holiness shape your thoughts, speech, and actions.
A godly woman doesn’t just go through the motions of faith; she radiates the presence of Jesus wherever she goes.
7. Brotherly Kindness
This refers to showing warm affection and compassion to others in the family of faith. It’s the sisterly love that encourages, prays for, and supports one another — the kind of love that draws people closer to Christ.
8. Love
Love is the culmination of all these virtues. It is the very character of God Himself — unconditional, sacrificial, patient, and pure.
When love governs your life, every other quality flows beautifully in balance.

A Spiritual Thermometer
Peter tells us that these qualities are not optional extras. They’re spiritual “vital signs.”
“For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful.” — 2 Peter 1:8
Think of this list as a spiritual thermometer — a way to measure the health of your walk with God.
When you lack these things, you become spiritually shortsighted, unable to see clearly. You forget who you are in Christ — that you’ve been forgiven and cleansed from sin.
It’s easy to drift through life without noticing how far you’ve wandered from your first love. These verses lovingly call us back to diligence — to stay alert and intentional in our growth.
Be Diligent — Make Your Calling Sure
In verse 10, Peter urges believers to “be even more diligent to make your call and election sure.”
This doesn’t mean you earn your salvation — that was already secured by Jesus’ finished work on the cross. Rather, it’s about living in a way that confirms your faith — showing evidence of the transforming power of Christ in you.
Diligence requires daily effort — not striving in your own strength, but depending on God’s grace as you pursue spiritual maturity.
“For if you do these things, you will never stumble.” — 2 Peter 1:10
Imagine that promise — you will never stumble! When your life is grounded in these virtues, you will walk securely with God, and your faith will bear lasting fruit.
A Glorious and Triumphant Entrance
Peter concludes with this breathtaking promise:
“For so an entrance will be supplied to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” — 2 Peter 1:11
What a beautiful picture! When your life reflects these godly qualities, you will one day step into eternity joyfully — welcomed by your Savior with the words, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
Your journey will have been worth it — every tear, every trial, every act of love and perseverance.
How to Cultivate Fruitful Growth in Your Faith
If you’re wondering how to grow in these areas, here are some practical steps:
- 🌿 Spend time daily with Jesus. Read Scripture, pray, and journal what He shows you.
- 🌿 Reflect on your spiritual “map.” Which of these qualities is God highlighting in your life today?
- 🌿 Ask the Holy Spirit for help. You can’t grow by willpower alone. Ask Him to shape your heart.
- 🌿 Practice one quality intentionally. Focus on living out one virtue each week — such as kindness or perseverance.
- 🌿 Surround yourself with godly women. Fellowship encourages growth and accountability.
- 🌿 Keep a “Fruitful Faith Journal.” Record moments when you see God growing these qualities in your life.

Final Thought
Sweet friend, don’t be discouraged if you’re not “there yet.” None of us are. Growing in faith is a lifelong process — a journey of grace and transformation.
