1 Thessalonians 5:16–18 (NKJV)
Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

As the holidays approach, we often picture cozy gatherings, the aroma of baked pies, and laughter around the dinner table. Yet for many women, this season also brings stress, long to-do lists, and emotional overwhelm.

Maybe your heart is tugged between the joy you want to feel and the exhaustion that threatens to steal it. You might appear calm on the outside—smiling, serving, doing all the things—while inside you feel stretched thin.

Friend, I get it. I’ve been there too.

The truth is, when we’re caught up in the swirl of busyness, gratitude and joy can slip quietly out of our hearts. But Scripture reminds us that joy and gratitude aren’t found in perfect circumstances—they’re found in Jesus.

Finding Gratitude in Every Season

The apostle Paul wrote to the believers in Thessalonica while he was enduring hardship, persecution, and suffering. Yet he penned these remarkable words:

“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks.”

What a perspective! He didn’t say, “Rejoice when life feels good,” or “Give thanks when everything works out.” He said, in everything.

  • That means in the stress of getting ready for the company.
  • It means when the pie burns.
  • When your plans fall through.
  • When your heart aches over family tension.
  • Even then—especially then—Paul says to give thanks.

Gratitude is not a feeling; it’s a choice. And when we choose gratitude, something supernatural happens—our hearts begin to shift. The heaviness starts to lift.

Gratitude produces joy.

It’s like a spark that lights the flame of peace within our souls.

The Heart Behind the Gratitude & Joyfulness Plan

That’s why I’m so excited about our Gratitude & Joyfulness Bible Reading Plan for the upcoming weeks. As the holiday season begins to unfold, it’s easy to let the joy of Jesus get buried beneath the wrapping paper and busyness.

This Bible Reading Plan is an intentional pause—a way to re-center your heart on Jesus, no matter what your days hold.

Each day, you’ll find a verse to read, write, and reflect on. I’ve discovered that when I write Scripture, it settles deeper into my heart. Writing slows us down, inviting us to linger with Jesus and truly hear His voice through His Word.

And when you pair Scripture writing with journaling, it becomes a conversation with God—your words, His truth, and your heart laid open before Him.

That’s where transformation happens.

When I take time to journal through a verse like 1 Thessalonians 5:16–18, I begin to see how God’s will for my life isn’t about striving or perfection—it’s about rejoicing, praying, and giving thanks.

Simple. Yet life-changing.

Four Steps to a Joyful Heart

In this one short passage, Paul gives us a recipe for joy. It’s not complicated or fancy, but it’s deeply powerful. Let’s look closer together.

1. Rejoice Always

Joy isn’t something we muster up; it’s something God gives when we draw near to Him.

Rejoicing always means we anchor our joy in who God is, not in how our day goes. Even when life feels heavy, we can rejoice in His character—His faithfulness, His love, His promises that never fail.

When we choose to rejoice, even in the midst of tears, we are declaring, “God, I trust You.”

And that trust ushers in peace beyond understanding.

2. Pray Without Ceasing

Have you ever whispered prayers throughout your day? Folding laundry, cooking dinner, running errands—those are moments to stay in conversation with God.

Prayer doesn’t have to be long or fancy. Sometimes it’s as simple as, “Lord, help me be patient right now,” or “Thank You, Jesus, for this quiet moment.”

When our hearts stay turned toward God, it changes everything. It transforms ordinary moments into sacred ones.

And before we know it, we find ourselves walking in His presence all day long.

3. In Everything Give Thanks

Gratitude reorients our hearts. It pulls our eyes off what’s missing and places them on the blessings that surround us—even in the messy and mundane.

I love keeping a gratitude journal, especially this time of year. Each morning, I write three simple things I’m thankful for. Some days it’s big—answered prayer, family milestones, or ministry blessings. Other days it’s small—a warm cup of tea, a cozy blanket, the quiet hum of the heater on a cold morning.

When you start writing them down, you begin to realize how much God’s grace weaves through every detail of your life.

That’s when gratitude produces joy.

4. For This Is the Will of God in Christ Jesus for You

So often, we wonder, What is God’s will for my life?

This verse gives us a clear answer:
His will is that we rejoice, pray, and give thanks—continually.

God’s will isn’t just about what we do, but who we are becoming in Christ.

A woman filled with gratitude and joy becomes a living testimony of His grace. Her peace shines through her home. Her words reflect kindness. Her presence radiates calm.

And it all begins with a heart aligned with His will.

Preparing Your Heart for the Holidays

As we move into the holiday season, let’s not let the hustle rob us of what matters most—our joy in Jesus.

Maybe this year you’ll start a new rhythm:
☕ Spend 15 minutes each morning with your Bible and journal.
🕯 Light a candle, pour a cup of coffee, and quiet your soul.
✍️ Write the day’s verse from the Gratitude & Joyfulness Bible Reading Plan.
💗 Reflect on what God is showing you and jot down three things you’re thankful for.

It’s amazing how these few moments can set the tone for your entire day.

You’ll find that when you intentionally focus on gratitude, your heart naturally fills with joy—and that joy spills over into your family, your words, and even your countenance.
