Trusting God in Unfamiliar Places

Discover how Joseph’s flight into Egypt shows that trusting God in uncertain seasons leads to obedience, protection, and confidence in His providence. His guidance is still steady and sure today—even when we find ourselves in unfamiliar or challenging situations.

Matthew 2:13–15 (NKJV)

Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, “Arise, take the young Child and His mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I bring you word; for Herod will seek the young Child to destroy Him.”

When he arose, he took the young Child and His mother by night and departed for Egypt,

and was there until the death of Herod, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, “Out of Egypt I called My Son.” Matthew 2:13-15 (NKJV)

Trusting God in Unfamiliar Places: Lessons from the Flight into Egypt

Trusting God in unfamiliar territory is never simple. We like comfort, predictability, and the safety of what we know. Yet, in Matthew 2:13–15, Joseph shows us what it looks like to obey God when life suddenly shifts, circumstances become uncertain, and the next step is unclear.

Faithfully reading your Bible each day opens your eyes to more than historical accounts or ancient stories. Scripture reveals layers of truth that speak directly into the challenges women face right now—fear, transition, sacrifice, and the longing to feel safe in a world that feels anything but stable. Joseph and Mary’s flight into Egypt is one of those powerful moments where God’s care, direction, and protection shine through.

Joseph didn’t hesitate. When the angel warned him of Herod’s evil plan, he trusted God and gathered Mary and the young Child and left that very night. His obedience wasn’t convenient. It wasn’t easy. But it was immediate—and it preserved the Savior of the world.

Herod, driven by fear of losing control, ordered the murder of all Jewish baby boys under the age of two. It was a dark moment in history. But right in the middle of chaos, God protected His Son through Joseph’s willingness to trust and obey.

And that’s where this story meets your life today.

How Can You Apply the Flight into Egypt to Your Own Life?

1. Obey God Promptly—Even When It’s Hard

Joseph obeyed instantly. When God nudges your heart through Scripture, prayer, or wise counsel, be willing to trust God—even when it’s uncomfortable. Obedience isn’t about perfection; it’s about trust.

2. Submit to God’s Protection and Providence

God didn’t remove the danger, but He provided a way through it. When circumstances feel threatening or uncertain, God’s protection covers you just as surely as it covered Joseph’s Family.

3. Know That Even in “Exile,” You Are Under God’s Care

Egypt was foreign, unfamiliar, and unsettling—and yet it was God’s chosen place of safety. Sometimes God shelters you in a season you never wanted because He sees what you cannot.

Sacrifice and Prioritizing What Matters Most

Joseph uprooted his family overnight. He left his home, community, work, and everything familiar, trusting in God’s direction. Obedience often requires sacrifice and a willingness to put God’s leading above your comfort.

A few months ago, my husband and I faced a sudden move ourselves—from the East Coast to the Midwest. We had always said we wouldn’t move. We were settled, surrounded by decades of friendships, and honestly… Wisconsin gets cold. Yet after one long, heartfelt conversation, God made it clear that this was His direction for us.

Within just two days, our home was under contract, and within a month, we were packing, sorting, and stepping into a totally new life. And though I miss my friends deeply, my heart is full—overflowing with joy from being closer to our grandkids.

Sometimes God leads you into unfamiliar territory not to uproot your life, but to bless it.

The Reality of Persecution and Suffering

Faith does not guarantee a life free of difficulty. Joseph and Mary faced a violent threat against their Child. Their journey reminds us that suffering, danger, misunderstanding, and trials often come with stepping into God’s will.

When we decided to homeschool decades ago, we were questioned constantly. It was new, unfamiliar, and often misunderstood. You might be facing something much harder today, but Scripture gently reminds you: God’s people have always walked through adversity—and God has always walked with them.

The Fulfillment of Scripture

Matthew points out that the flight into Egypt fulfilled Hosea 11:1: “Out of Egypt I called My Son.” What appeared to be a frightening, chaotic moment was actually a thread in God’s larger story.

Your life is woven the same way. Events that feel random or painful often become powerful pieces of what God is doing behind the scenes. Trust that He works all things—even the unexpected detours—into His perfect plan.
