5 Powerful Habits to Go Deeper with God
These 5 Powerful habits for going deeper with God will help you if you’re not sure how to develop a closer walk with Jesus.
Do you desire to go deeper with God but aren’t sure how?
Maybe you read your Bible occasionally and pray throughout the day, yet you still feel as though something is missing. You want to know God more personally, recognize His work in your life, and experience a closer relationship with Jesus.
First things first, to go deeper with God, you must have a personal relationship with God. Do you know Jesus as your personal Savior?
Have you been there too?
Going deeper with God is possible, but it doesn’t happen through a complicated formula. It begins with a sincere desire to know Him and a willingness to make room for Him in your everyday life.
The world offers plenty that promises to satisfy us, like a new home, new furniture, more money, greater success, or a closet filled with beautiful clothes. It isn’t wrong to enjoy the blessings God gives us, but none of those things can satisfy the deepest needs of our hearts.
Only Jesus can do that.
God desires a relationship with you more than He desires an impressive list of accomplishments. He isn’t waiting for you to create a perfect spiritual routine. He invites you to come to Him just as you are and begin taking small, faithful steps toward knowing Him more deeply.
Before we explore five powerful habits that can help you grow closer to God, we need to begin with the foundation of that relationship.

Begin With a Personal Relationship With Jesus
Going deeper with God begins by knowing Jesus Christ as your personal Savior.
The Bible tells us:
For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Romans 3:23
But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Romans 5:8
Every one of us has sinned. We cannot bridge the distance between ourselves and a holy God through good behavior, doing ‘good’ deeds, generosity, or impressive accomplishments.
We cannot earn salvation.
That may sound discouraging until we understand what Jesus has already done for us.
But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name. John 1:1
Jesus died on the cross and shed His blood for our sins. He took the punishment we deserved and rose from the dead, conquering sin and death. Through His death and resurrection, He made a way for us to be forgiven and receive eternal life.
Romans 5:8 tells us that God demonstrated His love toward us while we were still sinners.
Jesus didn’t wait for us to improve ourselves before He loved us. He came to rescue us because we could never rescue ourselves.
Imagine a deep chasm separating you from God. You could try to jump across it, but your best effort would never be enough. The cross of Jesus is the bridge across that separation.
You cross that bridge by placing your faith in Him.
John 1:12 teaches that those who receive Jesus and believe in His name are given the right to become children of God. Salvation isn’t something you earn. It is God’s gift, received by grace through faith.
If you have never received Jesus as your Savior, you can come to Him today. Admit that you are a sinner, believe that Jesus died and rose again, ask Him to forgive you, and place your trust in Him alone.
Spiritual habits cannot save you. Reading your Bible, praying, worshiping, or eating healthy foods will never earn you a place in heaven. These habits become meaningful after you have placed your faith in Jesus because they help you grow in the relationship He has already given you.

Go Deeper With a Simple Commitment
Once you have a relationship with Jesus, tell Him that you want to know Him better.
You don’t need eloquent words. Simply pray:
“Lord, I want to grow closer to You. Help me desire Your Word and recognize the distractions keeping me from spending time with You. Teach me to know You more deeply.”
Then begin by going deeper with the time you have.
You might have five minutes, ten minutes, or thirty minutes. The amount of time matters less than bringing your undivided heart to Jesus.
Try practicing the following habits for thirty days. Don’t approach them as a rigid checklist.
Think of them as practical ways to remove distractions, focus your heart, and create room to go deeper in your relationship with God.
Habit 1: Care for Your Body and Daily Choices
You might not think your physical habits have anything to do with your relationship with God, but the way you care for your body can affect your energy, concentration, and emotions.
When you are exhausted, dehydrated, or surviving on sugar and caffeine, it can be difficult to focus while reading the Bible or praying.
Caring for your body won’t automatically make you more spiritual, but it can help you become more attentive and available for the things God has called you to do.
This doesn’t mean following a perfect diet or trying to reach a certain weight.
It isn’t another reason to feel guilty about yourself. It is simply an opportunity to care for the body God has given you with wisdom and grace.
You might begin by making one small change:
- Drink more water.
- Choose foods that give you steady energy.
- Go for a short walk.
- Create a more consistent bedtime.
- Stretch for a few minutes in the morning.
- Notice which habits leave you feeling sluggish or distracted.
Ask God to show you how to care for your body without becoming consumed by food, fitness, or appearance.
Your body is a gift, but it isn’t your identity.
Your identity is in Jesus Christ.
Healthy choices are simply one way to prepare yourself to serve Him with greater strength and attentiveness.
Habit 2: Declutter Your Life and Make Room for God
Have you ever sat down to read your Bible only to notice the laundry, check your phone, remember an email, and suddenly find yourself scrolling through social media?
Our lives are filled with distractions.
Not every distraction is sinful. Some are necessary responsibilities, while others are good things that have slowly taken too much of our time and attention.
Decluttering your life might mean reducing the time you spend online, watching television, or checking notifications.
It could mean saying no to an unnecessary commitment so you have room to rest and spend time with Jesus.
You may also need to declutter one small area of your home.
You don’t need to organize the entire house before you can meet with God.
Clear a chair, part of the kitchen table, or a small corner where you can keep your Bible, journal, and pen.
Make beginning as simple as possible.
Digital distractions can be especially difficult.
Try putting your phone on airplane mode or “Do Not Disturb” while you read your Bible. If you use a Bible app, silence your notifications before you begin.
Ask yourself:
“What is one thing I could remove or reduce so I have more room for Jesus?”
You may be surprised by how much peaceful space one small change can create.
Habit 3: Focus on God Through His Word
Reading the Bible is one of the most important ways to grow deeper with God because Scripture reveals who He is.
However, it is possible to read a chapter without truly focusing on Him.
You can hurry through the verses, check the reading off your list, and forget what you read a few minutes later.
The goal isn’t simply to finish a chapter.
The purpose is to go deeper with God.
Before you read, ask the Lord to open your understanding. Ask Him to show you what the passage reveals about His character and how its truth applies to your life.
Then slow down.
You don’t have to read several chapters every day. Sometimes one verse, carefully read and prayerfully considered, will stay with you longer than five hurried chapters.
As you read, ask:
- What does this passage teach me about God?
- Is there a promise I need to remember?
- Is there a command I should obey?
- Is there an example I should follow or avoid?
- How does this passage point me toward Jesus?
- What truth do I need to carry with me today?
Writing can help you slow down and pay attention.
Copy one meaningful verse into a notebook. Summarize the passage in your own words or turn the verse into a prayer.
You might also add a simple flower, border, or splash of color. Your journaling doesn’t have to be elaborate or artistic. The purpose is to linger over Scripture and allow God’s Word to fill your heart.
Remember, it’s about the heart, not the art.
Give Yourself Grace During Busy Seasons
When my children were little, getting up earlier than they did wasn’t always possible. I had sometimes been awake with a baby during the night, and then the children were up early in the morning.
If you are in a demanding season of motherhood, give yourself grace.
You may not have an uninterrupted hour to sit with a hot cup of coffee.
You can still meet with Jesus in the middle of your ordinary day.
Try reading or listening to Scripture:
- While feeding your baby
- During naptime
- While folding laundry
- As you prepare breakfast
- In the school pickup line
- While your children play nearby
Keep a verse card near the kitchen sink or place your Bible where you will see it.
Listen to an audio Bible while completing a necessary task.
Don’t wait for a perfect time to go deeper with God.
Bring Jesus the time and attention you have today.
Five sincere minutes with Him are better than postponing your quiet time until you can create a perfect routine.
Habit 4: Become More Intentional About Prayer
Prayer is simply talking with God, yet many of us struggle to pray intentionally.
You may pray short prayers throughout the day while driving, washing dishes, or caring for your family. Those prayers matter. God hears them.
However, there is also something special about setting aside focused time to pray.
Even after years of following Jesus, you may sometimes feel that you don’t know how to pray.
The disciples felt that way too. They asked Jesus to teach them, and we can ask Him the same thing.
You don’t need impressive words.
God already knows what you are thinking and feeling. Come honestly and tell Him what is on your heart.
If you need help staying focused, try this simple pattern:
Praise
Begin by praising God for who He is. Thank Him for His holiness, mercy, wisdom, patience, faithfulness, and unchanging love.
Confession
Ask God to show you anything you need to confess. Admit your sin without making excuses, and receive the forgiveness He offers through Jesus.
Thanksgiving
Thank God for specific blessings. Look for the small things as well as the big things: food, shelter, a conversation with a friend, a quiet moment, a sunny day, or strength to face something difficult.
The small is not insignificant. Thank Him.
Supplication
Bring your needs and the needs of others to God. Pray for your husband, children, grandchildren, friends, church, health, and ministry. Pray for loved ones who are far from Jesus.
A prayer journal can help you remember what you are praying about and notice how God has answered. Leave room to record praise, not only requests.
After you pray, sit quietly with the Scripture you have read. Ask God to help you understand and obey His Word. Everything we believe God is showing us must agree with the truth of Scripture.
Habit 5: Develop a Lifestyle of Worship
Worship is more than singing in church on Sunday morning. It is our response to God for who He is and all He has done.
You can worship God through singing, praying, giving thanks, obeying His Word, serving your family, and surrendering your plans to Him.
One simple way to include more worship in your life is to play praise music while you work around the house.
You might sing a favorite worship song, read an old hymn, or pray through a psalm.
You can also write down several attributes of God:
- God is faithful.
- God is merciful.
- God is holy.
- God is patient.
- God is my refuge.
- God is always with me.
Worship is especially powerful when life is difficult.
You don’t have to pretend everything is fine. You can worship while you are anxious, grieving, disappointed, or weary.
Biblical worship doesn’t deny the reality of your troubles. It reminds your heart that God remains faithful in the middle of them.
Worship shifts your attention from the size of your problem to the greatness of your God.
Your circumstances may not change immediately, but worship can change where you are looking.
It directs your eyes back to Jesus, who is still present and always sufficient.
Your 30-Day Challenge to Go Deeper With God
Would you like to put these habits into practice?
For the next thirty days, set aside at least five minutes each day to:
- Read a short passage from the Bible.
- Pray about what you have read.
- Remove one distraction during that time.
- Write down one truth you learned about God.
- End by thanking or praising Him for something specific.
As you continue, notice what God is doing in your heart.
Are you learning more about His character?
Are certain distractions beginning to lose their hold on you?
Is Scripture shaping your thoughts and choices?
Is prayer becoming more personal?
You may miss a day. You may become distracted. Your routine may be interrupted by a sick child, an unexpected responsibility, or simple exhaustion.
That doesn’t mean you have failed.
Receive God’s grace and begin again.
These five habits aren’t rules you must follow perfectly:
- Care for your body and daily choices.
- Declutter your life and make room for God.
- Focus on God through His Word.
- Become more intentional about prayer.
- Develop a lifestyle of worship.
Choose one small step rather than trying to change everything at once. Consistency is more helpful than an intense routine that leaves you exhausted and discouraged.
Going deeper with God is a lifelong journey, not a thirty-day achievement.
You will always have more to learn about Him.
There will always be new ways His Word speaks into the changing seasons of your life.
You don’t have to wait until life becomes quieter.
You don’t need an elaborate routine, a perfectly organized home, or hours of uninterrupted time.
Simply come to Jesus.
Open His Word, talk with Him honestly, and take the next small step toward knowing Him more deeply.
He will faithfully use the time you give Him to strengthen your faith and draw your heart closer to His.
