Lord, Teach Me to Get Beyond Prayerlessness

I struggle with prayer and sometimes my efforts border on prayerlessness. My desire is to pray fervently but I desperately need the Lord to teach me to get beyond my feeble attempts.

When life throws a curveball at me, I want to be ready to pour out my heart to the Lord for the situation in my life or that of others. I don’t want to be grappling for words and find emptiness because I didn’t daily walk closely with God.

I spend time in God’s Word daily and yes, I do pray.

But I want to go deeper with God because He is my supreme treasure.

I need the Lord to teach me to go beyond prayerlessness.

Because I want to pray more. And more fervently.

Prayer is a Battlefield!

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. In Jesus name, amen.

If you were to be given a letter grade for the quality and quantity of prayer in your life, what letter grade would you get?

Satan wants to give you a “D!”

Not quite an “F” because that would be total FAILURE and he knows you’re going to at least pray a little.

Satan wants to . . .

• Deter you from praying!
• Distract you while you are praying!
• Defile you so that your prayers are hindered! (Like when you have a nasty attitude towards your husband)
• Discourage you before, during, and after prayer! (*credit goes to my pastor for these)

There is much more negative spiritual activity going on than we realize. We tend not to think of it too often.

Prayerlessness is SO Subtle!

We don’t notice when we are deterred from praying because we have so much to do. Business can result in unintentional prayerlessness!

We don’t notice when a Facebook notification grabs our attention and we are distracted from praying!

How about when you have a disagreement with your husband? You never have those? It can defile our spirit because we are so aggravated with him that we just do NOT feel like praying about it!

Another subtle way Satan works is through discouragement while we are praying.

That discouragement can be enough to cause us to give up praying and go on to do something else.

Meanwhile, we hardly realize the source of our discouragement!

Lord, Teach Me to Get Beyond Prayerlessness

When someone you know is fighting for their life, it has a way of suddenly snapping you into prayerfulness. Quickly. Their life depends on it!

I get tired of seeing urgent prayer requests for those who are sick and seeing people mindlessly praying through these needs. They are extremely real to those close to that person.

We need to hold these people up in fervent prayer because often the person nearest to those who are sick, simply cannot pray.

Lord, teach me to get beyond prayerlessness BEFORE the need is urgent. Help me to be faithful in prayer!

If you remember how when Jesus was praying in the Garden of Gethsemane before He was crucified, while He was earnestly praying, the disciples fell asleep!

You are not alone if you struggle like the disciples (and me) with praying.

But . . . let’s NOT make it an excuse but instead take ACTION and learn to pray!

7 Prayer Tips

Here are 7 prayer tips taken directly from the Lord’s prayer in Matthew 6:9-11 or Luke 11:1-4:

1. Pray to your Father in Heaven!
2. Make His name Hallowed and Treasured!
3. Ask that His will be done!
4. Ask that your needs be supplied!
5. Ask forgiveness and forgive others their debts!
6. Ask that He will keep you from temptation!
7. Ask that He will deliver you from evil!
