Have you ever lost your patience with your husband, your children, or your grandchildren and immediately wished you could take your words back?

I know I have.
Sometimes life gets busy, someone says something that triggers us, and before we know it, we’ve responded in a way we wish we hadn’t.
If you’ve ever wondered why the Christian life feels like such a battle, you’re not alone.
The Bible tells us exactly why.
The Christian Life Is a Battle
In Galatians 5:22–26, Paul describes a battle taking place inside every believer.
It is the battle between the flesh and the Spirit.
As Christians, we have the Holy Spirit living within us, but we still battle our sinful nature every single day. That doesn’t mean you’ve failed. It means you’re in a spiritual battle.
Sometimes I think we expect to “arrive.”
I remember when I was about thirty-three years old, thinking that eventually I would reach a point where following Jesus would become easy. Maybe I’d finally conquer all my weaknesses and simply coast through the rest of life.
Then I realized something.
If God allows me to live into my nineties like my parents, I will still need Jesus every single day.
And honestly?
I’m thankful for that.
Because if I ever thought I had arrived spiritually, I might stop depending on Him.

Stop Being Surprised by the Battle
One of Satan’s greatest lies is convincing us that we’re the only ones struggling.
We’re not.
- Every Christian fights this battle.
- Some struggle with impatience.
- Others struggle with worry.
- Some battle pride.
- Others battle discouragement.
We all have areas where we need God’s grace.
The struggle itself isn’t the problem.
Giving up is.
You Can’t Produce Spiritual Fruit
One of the greatest lessons I’ve learned is that I cannot manufacture the fruit of the Spirit.
Years ago, I struggled with a heaviness that felt almost like depression.
I chose joy as my One Word for the year because I desperately wanted to experience it.
- I prayed for it.
- I searched Scripture about it.
- I chose to rejoice even when I didn’t feel joyful.
But true joy wasn’t something I could create on my own.
The Holy Spirit produced it as I continued spending time with Jesus.
That’s how all spiritual fruit grows.
- Love.
- Joy.
- Peace.
- Patience.
- Kindness.
- Goodness.
- Faithfulness.
- Gentleness.
- Self-control.
They grow naturally as we stay connected to Christ.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another. Galatians 5:22-26

Walking with Jesus Produces Fruit
Fruit doesn’t appear overnight.
It grows.
The same is true in our spiritual lives.
The more we spend time with Jesus, the more our lives begin to resemble His.
- That means reading Scripture.
- Writing out Bible verses.
- Praying.
- Meditating on God’s Word.
For me, Bible journaling has become one of my favorite ways to slow down and really think about what God is teaching me.
I often draw simple flowers beside the verses I’m studying—not because I’m an artist, but because it helps me linger in God’s Word a little longer.
Remember…
It’s about the heart, not the art.
Four Practical Ways to Walk by the Spirit
As busy moms and grandmas, life moves quickly. Here are four simple habits that help me walk by the Spirit each day.
1. Pray Before You Respond
Before speaking, pause.
Ask the Holy Spirit to help you respond with love instead of reacting from emotion.
2. Pause Before Speaking
Sometimes the wisest thing we can do is say nothing for a few seconds.
Those few moments give God room to redirect our hearts.
3. Memorize One Fruit of the Spirit
Spend one week focusing on one fruit.
Ask God to grow that quality in your life.
4. Invite the Holy Spirit Into Your Day
Don’t wait until you’ve already lost your patience.
Invite Him to lead you before your feet even hit the floor each morning.
Jesus Doesn’t Expect Perfection
One illustration came to me this week.
I actually fell out of bed.
One moment I was sitting on the edge of the mattress.
The next, I was on my hands and knees on the floor.
Thankfully, I wasn’t hurt.
It reminded me of what happens spiritually.
- Sometimes we fall.
- Sometimes we fail.
- But Jesus doesn’t leave us lying there.
He reaches down, picks us up, forgives us, and invites us to keep walking with Him.
That’s grace.
Walk With Jesus Today
If you’ve been discouraged because you keep struggling with sin, don’t quit.
Don’t believe the lie that you’ll never change.
- Instead, keep opening your Bible.
- Keep praying.
- Keep walking with Jesus.
The battle may continue, but so does God’s grace.
As you walk with Him day by day, the Holy Spirit will continue producing beautiful fruit in your life.
You don’t have to become perfect.
You simply need to keep walking with the One who is.
