Beginner’s Guide To Your Bible Journal
I have been Bible journaling for years and finally thought that I would share my Beginner’s Guide to Your Bible Journal so you can get started in this adventure.
First off, there is no right way or wrong way to do a Bible journal.
For years I have used either a spiral notebook or a 3-ring binder to contain my journaling.
You might even type your notes into Word or Evernote.
Whatever.
Just get started if you have never done it before. You will love it!
The first thing to do is decide whether you will be using a spiral notebook, 3-ring binder, composition book, or your laptop, or even your phone.
Do you want your journaling notebook to be the size of your Bible or a full-sized page?
Then, go to Walmart (or Target or Staples or Amazon) and purchase your new journal.
1. What to Put in Your Bible Journal
For years I mostly copied Bible verses that the Lord used to speak to my heart. There is something about copying a verse that causes you to slow down and meditate deeply on what you are reading.
In the last three or four years, I have actually been learning how to study the Bible. My journaling became ‘notes’ that reflected what the chapter was about or what spoke to my heart.
If you save your notes, you would be able to use them for a Bible study or Sunday school class.
I have no particular format to my journaling as it changes from day today.
2. Writing a Prayer for Your Journal
How many times do you wake up with a heaviness on your heart?
Sometimes it is just a depressing feeling that is lingering over your spirit. Other times it is for your husband, child, friend, or someone who is not saved.
Adding a written prayer to your journal helps to allow those thoughts to form into words. It also gives a record to your prayer that will show you where your prayers have been answered in time to come.
3. Doodling Your Journaling Journey
Have you seen the journaling Bibles and how some people are doodling to reflect the adjacent passage?
If you want to doodle but don’t have the nerve to draw right in your Bible, you could doodle in your journal or purchase an art notebook.
There is no right or wrong way to start your Bible journal, the sky is the limit!
Doodling helps you to slow down and meditate on the passage you just read. It unleashes that creativity that has been dormant for years.
It is a wonderful way of expressing yourself to God who is the author of creativity!
4. Using Evernote for Bible Journaling
For about two years, I used Evernote for my Bible journaling.
I want to be able to easily return to what I have written in my notes. Sometimes I even copy and paste my journaling notes right onto my blog’s Facebook page.
The advantage of using my laptop for journaling is that I can easily search what I have written months or even years before. That can be almost impossible in a stack of spiral notebooks and 3-binders. Believe me, I have tried!
5. Getting Started with Your Bible Journal
So after reading this, you want to get started with your Bible journal!!
It really isn’t that hard!
- Decide whether you will use a spiral notebook, 3-ring binder, or laptop.
- Purchase a notebook or install the program on your computer.
- Purchase some gel or colored pens that will make your journal colorful so that Bible verses and notes stand out.
- Just START. When you read the Bible, write a verse into your journal, or add some notes.
- Write a prayer in your journal, to sum up how the Lord spoke to your heart.
- Feeling extra adventurous? Add some doodle drawings that express a key verse in the passage.
Most of all, how you get started in your Bible journal is to JUST START!!
I’d LOVE to hear from you!!
