God is Your Dwelling Place: Finding Refuge in His Presence

God desires to be your dwelling place, not just a physical space, but a refuge, providing shelter, safety, and unwavering protection.

Finding Refuge in God

Have you ever longed for a place of complete safety, shelter, and peace? A place where you feel truly at home, secure, and at rest? The beautiful truth is that God desires to be your dwelling place—not just a physical space, but the refuge of your heart and life.

The world around us is constantly shifting, full of uncertainties, trials, and challenges. But God remains steadfast. He is our shelter, our covering, and our safe haven.

“Lord, You have been our dwelling place in all generations.” — Psalm 90:1

This verse reminds us that throughout all of history, God has been a dwelling place for His people. He is not limited by time, location, or circumstances. No matter where we are or what we face, we can rest in Him.

Do You Read Psalms Often?

I love reading the Psalms, especially when I need encouragement. There is something so comforting about David’s heartfelt cries to God and the reassurances of His faithfulness.

I often find myself journaling and coloring verses from Psalms in my favorite Bible or devotional coloring book. The process of reflecting on Scripture through creative journaling helps me slow down and truly absorb God’s promises.

Time and time again, I find God gently reassuring me to trust Him through every situation in my life. He has proven Himself to be my trustworthy dwelling place over and over again.

Cast your burden on the Lord,
And He shall sustain you;
He shall never permit the righteous to be moved. Psalm 55:22

God Reveals His Strength in the Mountains

Have you ever been awed by the beauty of a mountain? Towering, steadfast, and unshakable, mountains reflect the power and majesty of God.

“Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever You had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.” — Psalm 90:2

God’s presence and power existed before the mountains were even formed. He is eternal, unchanging, and steadfast. Just as the mountains stand strong against the elements, so does our God stand firm in His promises.

Mountains Have Been My Dwelling Place

I have always lived near mountains. No matter where I’ve been in life, I have found myself looking out at the beauty of their peaks or dwelling on their slopes.

As a young child, I would gaze out of my window at the hills and mountains beyond. They gave me a sense of wonder and stability. Even then, I felt God’s presence surrounding me.

As a teenager, I lived in Hawaii, less than a half-mile from Diamond Head, a volcanic crater that loomed up in front of our house. I lived in its shadow, a daily reminder of its presence. This made me think of God’s promise to cover us under the shadow of His wings.

Just as the sun casts a shadow over the mountain, creating a place of coolness and relief, God covers us in His protection and rest.

“He will cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you will find refuge; His faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.” — Psalm 91:4

During my college years, I lived in San Francisco, where my dorm sat on the side of a steep hill. I often looked out my window, but instead of seeing mountains in the distance, I was dwelling on one!

This made me realize something profound—sometimes, when we are in the middle of a situation, we don’t recognize God’s presence. We might not see Him working because we are too close to what we’re going through. Yet He is always there, surrounding us just as surely as that mountain beneath my feet.

Finding Refuge in God

God is Your Dwelling Place Wherever You Are

Now, I live at the top of a mountain, and although the trees sometimes block my view, I am still surrounded by the beauty of my dwelling place.

This reminds me of how God surrounds us with His presence. Even when we don’t always “see” Him, He is near. We just need to pause, seek Him, and become aware of His nearness.

Where do you live?

  • Do you live in the mountains?
  • Near the ocean, a lake, or a river?
  • On flat land where the horizon stretches endlessly before you?

No matter where you live, God is there. He was present before your home, before your city, and before time itself. He is your dwelling place—your safe shelter from life’s storms.

Finding Shelter in God

Life is unpredictable. Storms come, trials arise, and circumstances shift. But God never changes.

When the weight of the world feels overwhelming, run to Him. He is your stronghold, your refuge, and your dwelling place. You don’t have to weather the storms alone.

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” — Psalm 46:1

Just like a home provides shelter from the wind and rain, God provides protection and peace for our souls. He invites us to dwell in Him, to abide in His presence, and to find rest in His love.

Are You Seeking God as Your Dwelling Place?

Reading Psalm 90:1 reminds me to seek God more diligently. He is not just a distant Creator—He is my personal refuge, my place of peace.

Wherever you are in life, I encourage you to pause and reflect:

  • Are you dwelling in God’s presence daily?
  • Are you seeking shelter in Him when life feels uncertain?
  • How does the place you live remind you of God’s presence?

Let the beauty of creation—the mountains, rivers, and skies—remind you that God is with you. He is your eternal dwelling place, offering shelter, strength, and unshakable love.

No matter where you are or what you face, you can rest in Him.

“For then I will restore to the peoples a pure language,
That they all may call on the name of the Lord,
To serve Him with one accord. Zephaniah 3:9
