Are You Standing in God’s Presence

Discover how to stand in God’s presence through the story of Zachariah in Luke 1. Learn to slow down, listen, and draw near to Jesus each day.

Are You Standing in God's Presence

Have you been reading your Bible yet not taking the time to fully connect with your Savior?

It’s easy to check off your reading plan or devotional box without ever truly being still before God.

Today, I want to invite you to slow down—to stand in God’s presence—as you open His Word.

Let this moment become sacred ground where your heart listens, your spirit softens, and your soul becomes aware that you are not alone.

This morning, I began reading the Gospel of Luke and found myself identifying with Zachariah—the priest who came into the Holy of Holies to burn incense before God. He didn’t do this every day. In fact, it was such a high honor that a priest might experience it only once in his entire lifetime. The privilege was decided by casting lots, as was the custom among the priests of Israel.

“I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God . . . “

Digging Deeper: Luke 1:1–25 (NKJV)

Key Verse:

“And the angel answered and said to him, ‘I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God, and was sent to speak to you and bring you these glad tidings.’”
—Luke 1:19 (NKJV)

This chapter begins with a miraculous story of answered prayer. Zachariah and his wife, Elizabeth, were both righteous before God, walking blamelessly in His commandments, yet they had no children. In their culture, that was considered a great reproach—a symbol of shame. But God saw their quiet faithfulness and, in His perfect timing, sent an angel to announce that their long-awaited prayer was heard.

Their son, John, would become the forerunner of Christ—the one who would prepare the way for the Messiah.

Worship in Solitude Before God

Picture the scene: Zachariah stands in the temple, alone in the Holy Place, surrounded by the fragrance of incense rising like prayers to heaven. Outside, the people are gathered, praying and waiting. But inside—there, in that quiet place—Zachariah is serving before the Lord in solitude.

Then suddenly, the supernatural breaks in.

“Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing on the right side of the altar of incense. And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him. But the angel said to him, ‘Do not be afraid, Zacharias, for your prayer is heard; and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John.’”
—Luke 1:11–13 (NKJV)

I can only imagine how startled Zachariah must have been. Fear overwhelmed him. And when Gabriel gave the message, disbelief followed. How could this be? He and Elizabeth were well past the age of childbearing.

And yet—Gabriel stood firm with this declaration:

“I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God.”

Standing in God’s Presence

That statement stopped me in my tracks.

I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God.

What a powerful reminder that even the mightiest angels dwell continually before the throne of our Holy God. But because of Jesus—because the veil of the temple was torn from top to bottom when He died—we too have access to that sacred presence.

When Jesus rose from the dead, the barrier between God and mankind was removed.
We no longer need a priest to enter the Holy of Holies for us.
We can come boldly into His presence at any moment—at our kitchen table, in our car, while folding laundry, or walking through the woods.

You and I have direct access to the same presence that Gabriel stands in.

Let that truth soak deeply into your heart. You are invited into God’s holy presence—not as a visitor, but as His beloved child.

From Fear to Faith

When Gabriel appeared, Zachariah was troubled and fearful—just like we often are when faced with the unexpected. And when God’s promises seem impossible, our first response is often doubt.

I see myself in Zachariah. Maybe you do, too.

We pray. We ask God to move. But when He answers in ways we don’t expect, we hesitate.
We question. We analyze. We try to reason with the miraculous.

Zachariah’s fear and disbelief remind me how fragile faith can feel when faced with divine surprises. But God, in His mercy, doesn’t abandon Zachariah. Instead, He gives him a sign, and in the months that follow, Zachariah’s silence becomes a sacred space for reflection. When John is finally born, his tongue is loosed, and he bursts forth in praise!

God turns doubt into declaration.
Fear into faith.
Silence into song.

Your Invitation to Stand in God’s Presence

Dear sister, you may not be lighting incense in a temple today, but your heart is an altar.

When you open your Bible, you are stepping into the Holy of Holies.
When you whisper a prayer, you are standing before the same God who sent Gabriel.
When you worship, you are joining heaven’s chorus of praise.

The question isn’t whether God’s presence is available. It’s whether you will pause long enough to recognize it.

What would happen if, each morning, you whispered:

“Lord, I am here—standing in Your presence.”

What if you slowed your pace just long enough to sense the nearness of His Spirit—to feel His peace wash over your weary heart?

A Personal Reflection

When I think about standing in God’s presence, I picture Gabriel—strong, radiant, unwavering. Then I picture myself—weak, distracted, and often overwhelmed by the demands of life. Yet because of grace, I am invited into the same presence.

God isn’t asking for perfection; He’s inviting you into communion.
He wants your honesty, your worship, and your listening heart.
He wants you to come closer—to draw near.

I sometimes insert my own name into that verse as a reminder:

“I am Judith, who is standing in the presence of God.”

Would you try that too?
Say it aloud:

“I am ____________, who is standing in the presence of God.”

Let those words settle deeply into your heart.

No matter what you face today—chaos, worry, fear, or waiting—you can choose to stand in His presence. You can be still and know that He is God.
