How To Be Like Martha this Christmas
Martha would be the most amazing woman to come alongside you and help you prepare for Christmas this year.
She’s the best at organizing all the details needed to get done before Christmas!
She’s looking for someone to help serve others who understands the importance of getting things done.
This could be you!
Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His word. But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.” And Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:38-42)

If this is you, you are just like Martha!
If Martha prepared for Christmas this year, she’d still stress over her need for Mary (or you) to help with preparations.
The thing is, if the truth be told, I am just like Martha too!
Martha was Anxious!
Before you judge Martha for being anxious, it is important to know that she was probably serving many guests at her home that day.
You might be filled with anxiety too if Jesus was the honored guest at your Christmas gathering this year.
After all, Jesus is the Messiah and the most important person to ever eat in your home!
Martha was Distracted!
Martha was just like you.
- She was industrious!
- Hard-working!
- Filled with the most amazing ideas
In all your busyness this Christmas season, are you anxious and worried? Are you distracted from the one most important thing?
Martha was anxious and worried about serving her guests. She assumed Jesus would understand her dilemma and tell Mary to give her a hand.
But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.” (Luke 10:40)
I’ve been there and asked my husband to tell my children to help me!
Wouldn’t you be distracted if you had a houseful of hungry guests this Christmas?
Martha responded in a very normal way. Mary was the unusual one because she was able to block out distractions as she sat and listened to Jesus.
Do THIS if You Want to Be Just Like Martha this Christmas
- Allow the distractions to mount!
- Get exasperated with everyone who is not helping!
- Get irritated that your kids aren’t helping!
I identify with Martha every time I hear this story. I am more like her than I care to admit!
She is hurrying around as she cares for her guests; while her sister, Mary is seemingly oblivious to her need for help.
That is why Martha would love to have your help this Christmas. You can even ‘pick up’ her attitude!
Why Did Jesus Rebuke Martha?
Jesus normally loves to encourage diligence. What caused him to respond this way to Martha?
“Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. 42 But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:41-41)
You might wonder why Jesus rebuked her when she was working so hard.
It was because Jesus saw something that no one else saw.
He looks at the heart and not our outward appearance.
Jesus was so gentle when he rebuked Martha just as he is with me and you.
He saw that love wasn’t motivating her to serve. Anxiety was. Why was she so anxious? We don’t know.
What are you anxious about?
Martha’s anxiety was probably rooted in her pride over how others were perceiving her. Hmmm . . . that would be me!
She was probably motivated to impress others with her abilities as an excellent hostess.
How Much Pride is Wrapped Up in Our Preparations for Christmas?
I love this story about Martha because it resonates so thoroughly with who I am.
Christmas seems to bring out the best Martha in me!
I get so busy trying to beat the rush to the finish line on December 25th!
There is something about the stress, hustle, and bustle that’s appealing to us. Isn’t it just part of the season?
BUT . . . how much pride is wrapped up in the package?
I need to slow down my pace and enjoy Jesus, the Reason for the Season!
Jesus told Martha that she was troubled by many things. He saw through all she needed to do and cut right to the point.
She needed to adjust her attitude!
She was doing a whole lot of unnecessary things.
Jesus was NOT saying she shouldn’t cook and clean for her guests. He was referring to her pride which was the motive for her diligence.
Her anxieties and worries were holding her back.
Even though it looked outwardly like she had it all together, Jesus saw that underneath it all, she needed to choose the good part like Mary.
Mary chose to sit and listen as Jesus taught her.
Martha was rushing past Jesus to do things that really were not the most important.
What will you do to include Jesus?
Beautiful message… a wake up call to all of us who are the Marthas of this world but yearn to be the Mary’s sitting at our Lord’s feet!
Thank you, Esther. You said that right. I think most of us ‘Martha’s’ yearn to be Mary’s. I know I do!
