10 Comforting Psalms that Calm Your Anxiety

Which comforting psalms do you turn to to calm your anxiety? Embracing these 10 psalms will equip and encourage your heart and bring healing to your soul.

When you’re faced with a situation that causes your heart to be filled with anxiety, it is easy to be filled with confusion as to where to turn. That is why it is good to have an arsenal of psalms that will bring comfort to every fiber in your body.

Anxiety and stress intertwine their vicious fingers around your soul. A bad situation in your life can cause you to worry which if left unchecked can end up in physical health issues that harm the body.

That is why you need to turn to God for His comforting care over you.

Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him,
On those who hope in His mercy,
To deliver their soul from death,
And to keep them alive in famine. Psalm 33:18-19

. . . casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. 1 Peter 5:7

Worry and anxiety are sins that we tend to excuse and accept. I get that!

In accepting that it is OK to be filled with anxiety, we allow ourselves to continue worrying and the momentum builds until it wracks our body with poor health.

In realizing that anxiety is a sin, we are willing to turn to Jesus for the encouragement and help that we so desperately need. One reason why it is so important to have a collection of psalms that we go to is so that we start replacing our anxious thoughts and actions with the positivity that these psalms instill in our hearts.

Anxiety takes hold of our hearts when we stop believing that Jesus can be comforting and calming in our situation.

Ways You Experience Anxiety

  • When you are sick!

You can claim Psalm 34:19 which says, “Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the LORD delivers him out of them all.” However, there is a flip side to every promise in the Bible and we see that in Romans 5:3-5!

Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. Romans 5:3-5

  • Fear of getting old!
  • Uneasy about our death!
  • Worries about becoming faithless!
  • Concerns about finances!
  • Anxious about things going wrong!

But I promised to share what psalms will be comforting when you need to calm your anxiety.

Give unto the Lord, O you mighty ones,
Give unto the Lord glory and strength.
Give unto the Lord the glory due to His name;
Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness. Psalm 29:1-2

1. The LORD helps the troubled: Psalm 3

I cried aloud to the Lord, and he answered me from his holy hill. Selah. I lay down and slept; I woke again, for the Lord sustained me. Psalm 3:4-5

2. LORD gives safety to the faithful: Psalm 4

In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety. Psalm 4:8

You will prepare their heart;
You will cause Your ear to hear, Psalm 10:17

I would have lost heart, unless I had believed
That I would see the goodness of the Lord
In the land of the living.

For this is God,
Our God forever and ever;
He will be our guide
Even to death. Psalm 48:14

8. Praise for the LORD’s mercies: Psalm 103

And all that is within me, bless His holy name!
Bless the Lord, O my soul,
And forget not all His benefits:

Who heals all your diseases,
Who redeems your life from destruction,
Who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies, Psalm 103:1-4

9. Thanksgiving and deliverance from death: Psalm 116
